I would have to guess, because you do have the little searchlight on over the power button, that at least the power supply is coming up into standby mode. If you are not hearing that, then you may indeed be dealing with a failed power supply. At this point I fear perhaps a power supply or even worse logic board. Still no chime, black screen, the led light stays lit (does not blink a pattern) and the computer does not boot. I put the new battery in and tried starting the computer. I went and bought a fresh battery since the one I swapped out was also probably 6 years old. Black screen again but this time no chime. This time when I pushed the power button I got nothing. I shut the computer back down to see if this was just a coincidence. Thinking it may be the CMOS battery (since the problem seems to be getting progressively worse) I put one in from one of my other Macs. When it wouldn't boot, I turned it off by holding the power button. This has happened to me a few times before but normally it finally boots after trying a few times. This morning I tried turning it on, I heard the chime but the screen stayed black.
